What’s the Difference Between CBD & THC?
Cannabis and hemp naturally contain a number of organic compounds called “phytocannabinoids.” Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is one of them, as is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.
When consumed or ingested, these compounds interact with our body – specifically, a system of neurotransmitters called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system (ECS) helps our body regulate itself, supporting processes relating to things like mood, appetite, sleep, and even our immune response. This system is present in all mammals and is an important modulatory system in the function of the brain, endocrine, and our body’s response to stress. The THC compound is responsible for the “high” and change in mental state that’s associated with cannabis in popular culture.
Meanwhile, CBD has taken the wellness and medical world by storm with its numerous possible therapeutic benefits. CBD products have been lauded as potentially effective at relieving stress, combatting anxiety, and even treating some forms of epilepsy. In general, when separated from the stimulating effects of THC, CBD can have a calming, soothing effect.*
Why Go THC-Free?
It’s important to understand what “THC-free” means when you see it on your CBD wellness products’ packaging. This is a good opportunity to explain the difference between full-spectrum CBD and broad-spectrum CBD.
While full-spectrum CBD contains a small amount of THC, broad-spectrum CBD theoretically contains no THC at all, although there may be trace amounts. By law, hemp-derived CBD products must contain less than 0.3% THC in the USA. CBD isolate, or “pure CBD,” is the only CBD that does not contain any of the other compounds found in cannabis, THC included. Note that even when a product has a low enough THC quantity to be considered “THC-free,” – the trace amounts of THC still be picked up on a drug test.
